A History Behind the Chevrolet Camaro

With all eyes on the latest car prize up for grabs in the Mater Cars for Cancer lottery, we can’t help but be star-struck by the sleek, sophisticated vehicle (with an impressive performance to match) that is the Chevrolet Camaro.

So how did this powerhouse come to be? We went back over the history of the Camaro to learn what makes this prize car a superb commodity.

Where It All Began

The Original

The Camaro burst onto the scene on September 29, 1966. It was created purely as an answer to the Ford’s Mustang, designed with the intention to bring the sports car experience to the everyday driver. The original Camaro’s exterior was distinguished by its long hood, short deck and seating for four. Two Camaro models were available: The Sports Coupe and the Convertible.

Second Generation

In 1970, the world was introduced to the new Camaro, featuring some distinct differences. The exterior was inspired by the design of European Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso. Customers had their choice of 8 engines to pick from (375-horsepower V8 being the strongest). Other luxe additions included air-conditioning and power windows and door locks.

Third & Fourth Generation

Unveiled in 1981 was a Camaro fitted out with a brand-new hatchback body style and fancy performance features to boot. They were also 227kg lighter than the Camaro models before them. The fourth generation debuted in mid-1993, and this saw V6 become the standard on every Camaro along with an improved steering system.

By the end of 2002, low sales sadly forced the Camaro to be dropped. In 2006, it was announced the Camaro would be coming back, and it re-entered the market in 2010.

The Comeback

The Camaro’s new vintage look was inspired by the original design, but it packed more punch with performance than any model before it. The newest model included a standard 3.6L V6 engine that produced 312-horsepower with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. In 2012, the fastest Camaro ever was built, featuring 580-horsepower supercharged V8 engine. The Camaro continued to have improvements and tweaks made to further enhance each new model, which brings us to the HSV Chevrolet Camaro 2SS Coupe up for grabs in the latest car lottery.
